Training #588 – Ask us Anything (about translations!)

This week covered the latest news in publishing for June of 2025, and walked through what would be involved in acquiring the translation and distribution rights for a book.

Specifically:

  • Anthropic has won their court case stating that their use of copyrighted works fell under Fair Use, although they may have to answer for using pirated books as part of that Fair Use.
  • Amazon and KDP have publicly changed the way that they track sales ranks, and we discussed what those changes were and how they may affect us as authors. We also discussed how this affects short term sales rank changes.
  • Spotify has announced the audiobook growth that they have seen since launching their platform a year and a half ago.
  • There is a new Audiobook awards show, debuting this Fall and now accepting nominations, called The Speakies.
  • We discussed what to expect in the process of acquiring the translation rights to a book, and how to go about it step by step.
