Training #654 – News & Ask us Anything

This session was an open Q&A with three pieces of publishing news.

  • Chooseco, the company behind the Choose Your Own Adventure books, is launching a line for adults, starting with an interactive Pride and Prejudice next July.
  • Audiobook publisher Podium has been acquired by venture capital.
  • BookBub Featured Deals will now be re-sent to subscribers who didn’t open the first email.

That BookBub news turned into a longer conversation about the service. We cover how BookBub chooses which deals to run, how far ahead to submit, and what it costs. We also answer whether you can run a deal while your book is in KDP Select, and explain how Countdown Deals and free days work there. Erin explains how to use BookBub’s subscriber emails to research what readers in your genre are buying.

For the questions, we looked at Designrr: what it does well, who it’s really built for, and the tools we’d use instead for formatting and transcription.

Then we spent most of the second half on Colleen’s question about keeping characters consistent across a picture book series. We cover character sheets, using AI and its limits, finding and testing illustrators on Fiverr, Upwork, and Reedsy, reading an illustrator’s packages to keep costs down, and why art direction is your job unless you hire a full-service studio.
