Training #647 — Ask us Anything about Publishing News, AI Videos, or Graphic Novels
In this Ask Us Anything session, we opened with the latest publishing news, and most of it was about AI.
Claude is adding watermarking to the text its models generate, driven by a new EU disclosure law but rolling out worldwide anyway, and we talked through what it can actually detect and when it matters to you. We also covered why AI detectors keep flagging work written before these models existed, a $2 million book deal that collapsed over an accusation nobody could prove, a record number of Pulitzer honourees disclosing AI use, the dismissal of the Crave copyright suit, a change in how Barnes & Noble is approaching author events, and a writing app that turns your word count into a game.
From there Blaine walked through the short animated clips he made for Picture Book Secrets: a weekend of learning the tools, shown with the failures left in. He covered what it cost him, how prompting has changed over the past year, why you are better off starting from a character you already have, and how the pieces get assembled once the model hands them back. That opened out into a longer conversation about screen recording and video editing: which programs are worth paying for, which are free, and what each one will and will not do.
Erin closed with graphic novels, after a library trip turned up a book one of her kids was already excited about. She looked at how webcomics turn into printed books, the platforms authors publish them on, why the audience usually arrives from somewhere else entirely, and what is worth reading in the terms before you post anything. That led into the moneyl who actually has it, why publishers hesitate over a full-color book, when a Kickstarter makes sense, where merchandise fits, and how shipping costs can move on you between the campaign and the delivery.
