You want to write a book, and nobody bothered to teach you how. Don’t worry! Writing a book is actually pretty simple. It’s mostly a matter of planning your work, then working your plan.
Like many projects, it starts with a lot of steps up front, followed by concerted and dedicated effort on one step for a long time. We’re not including “get motivated and disciplined” among the steps, but if those aren’t in place this will be harder than if they were.

Step One: Know Your Books
Start the process by knowing what kind of book you want to write, and the basic conventions for that kind of book. For example, average word counts for different genres vary wildly:
